well, hi to everybovy, this is my new african dude. can someone tell me the sex and what kind of lake malawi cichlid it is? he is around 20cm. how big he grows, and all basic stuff about this fish.

Nimbochromis venustus (commonly known as the venustus and also known as the 'giraffe hap').

Mature males have blue head pigmentation, so your's is a male.

These are carnivores or ambush predators and do great on a quality high protein diet. The get up to about 10" (26cm) or maybe a little more.
 
Looks like a male to me. Mine has been VERY aggressive, easily the most aggressive in my tank. He grew faster than my group of juvies and was beating up my larger guys so I traded him in for another small one. No more nipped fins!! He was also the first one to the live food and was the only one to accept a baby lizard I threw in there. They are one of the bigger fish from malawi and Im looking forward to the adult coloration:

I purchased my group of venustus last year and they were about 2"/5cm. Now the biggest one is about 7"/17cm. I figure it took mine roughly 6 months to grow from egg to 5cm juvie, so I estimate my 17cm venustus to be 1.5-2 years old.

Since your's is 20-24cm, I'd guess it's about 3-4 years old, but there's really no way to really know (growth rate varies among individual fish based on environment, diet, tank mates, water quality, etc).

I believe they live for 8-10years.

spider killed my venustus

my friend and i were bored so i saw this spider crawling on my carpet

i said as a joke lets feed it to the fish

so in the end we did the venustus was very greedy he swallowed the spider whole and 2 minutes later he dstarted swimming funny it got worse and worse

and in the end he died


was very sad to watch
