New and Confused?

Is the Aragamax Sugar-Sized Reef Sand - "live sand"?

if not do i need live sand or does it not matter with a lot of live rock in there anyway?

No, it is not live sand..The bagged live sand, in my opinion is a waste of money. The sand bed that you lay in the tank will get seeded by the live rock. To aid this, you can also get some sand from a fellow reefer or LFS, direct from a running reef and spread over the new sand bed. Of course, i would be more than happy to post some out to you if needed..

I am thinking of using part of my sump as a hospital tank so that the water quality is always exactly the same for the sick fish - but obviously if a fish does become ill i would have a section which could block of the live feed of water to it - does this sound like a good plan or not?

personally no. the sump will have a constant slow water flow going through it. A hospital tank should be a seperate tank, say 15 gallon min which can be used for adding medications etc etc to it and we would not want 99% of medications used getting back to the display tank and the vast majority of them will kill the inverts and live rock in the display tank...

Thanks for that advice Niko.
What would I have in the "Inlet Section of my sump"?

In the refugium I will have aragamax reef sand (4 inches) and live rock - also some caulerpa algae. Im assuming this is all i need in the refugium.
Or should I add mangroves as well in the refugium?

Im considering using 12 inches of the tank for the return as I have read up on your past discussions about evaporation.
What goes into the return part of the sump if anything
Obviously I know the clean water will go here but is there anything else i should consider?

Thanks very much

In here you can keep your skimmer, if you run one.

Yes, that about sum's up the contents of the fuge, possibly the heater if you like. Mangrove are not required, have to admit, never seen them used in a marine sump..

In the return, all you need to have in here is the return pump itself. The physical size of the pump has to be thought of and the displacement of the water in there...

Thanks alot Niko - I forgot I could put the heater in the sump. I have two heaters so I will hide one in the aquarium and have one in the sump. Or should I have them both in the sump? Which do u think is the best option?
thankyou once again for all your help and advice.
