Hey everyone,

I purchased a new remora pro and installed it last tuesday. I know that it takes a little bit of time to break in but my skimmer is barely producing any skimmate after almost a week. I have my collection cup all the way to the bottom. It seems like foam only rises every once in a while and drops enough to fill the collection but about a fourth of an inch.

Is there anything I should check on or am I just being impatient and need to give it more time?

Thanks,

Justin

Well, right now I have one blue devil damsel and two bicinctus clown fish. I also have 9 turbo snails and 13 blue legged crabs. This tank has been setup and running for 6 months.

Right now I have no problem growing algae so I can't imagine not having enough waste production. I'll wait a bit longer and see if it finally kicks in.

Sometimes it can take up to 2 week for skimmers to break in, just be patient

Give it some time to kick in, but here's a list of tweaks that you could find useful:

1. Microbubbles
Many people report excessive microbubbles from the Remora even after break-in. Easiest solution is to get some filter sponge (like for Hagen's Aquaclear series) and cut a slit down the middle of the sponge. Slip it over the outflow and you won't have any more microbubbles. Change the sponge every few days to prevent nitrate build-up.

2. Noise
The injection method of the Remora can be quite noisy. Just get a paper towel or even a cotton cloth and stuff it on top of the injector. It won't be silent, but the noise will be greatly reduced.

3. Performance
Want more skimmate? Ditch the Rio (or Maxijet) and upgrade to either a Mag3 for the regular Remora or a Mag5 for the Remora Pro. The added head pressure will turbocharge the skimmer. Use either PVC bits or tubing to make the connections. You can put a valve between the Mag and Remora to adjust flow.

I also use a Hagen surface skimmer as well. Drawing water from the surface (where pollutants tend to float) further increases skimmer performance.

Thanks for the suggests CR. I may look into the suggestion with the microbubbles. I actually don't have a problem with noise though. I hardly notice that its on unless i'm around my tank.

One question though, should the black screw on the injector inside of the skimmer be flushed with the nozzle or should it be raised? Right now its raised above the nozzle.

I'd trash that RIO pump you have there if I were you because they are a piece of junk. I'd get a Magdrive model maybe thats you're problem. I've got a Remora in my 75gal tank with a Magdrive 3 and I get a lot of output from my skimmer. I had a rio model when I first got my skimmer but the thing burned up in my tank.

"What is algea suppose to do?"

I was just saying that I imagine that I have something in my tank that needs to be pulled out if I am not having a problem growing red algea. Its not that bad yet but I'd like to nip it in the bud before I get a full blown war on my hands.

Is there anything inside of the RIO that I need to adjust because I just opened the box and placed it on the tude. I didn't use any of the attachments.

I'll give upgrading to a mag 3 pump some thought and see if this skimmer finally takes off.

Thanks
Justin

Do you (or anyone else) know if the Mag pumps fit in the preskimmer box they sell for the Remora? I know the maxijet is a little bit of a tight fit.
