You make an extension with PVC or tubing so that the Mag can sit on the bottom or something solid. I've got mine on part of a rock rack.
If you want to skim surface water, attach a Hagen surface skimmer to the intake of the Mag. Works better than the box because it's not affected by slight changes in water level (unlike the skimmer box) because it's a float mechanism.
