Hello everyone, I am new to marine aquariums but have been reading and have been very interested for awhile. Here are pictures of my set up and some inhabitants while I wait for my aquarium to settle. Does anyone know what kind of anemone this guy is? He came in on some live rock, as well as a brittle star. Also, the aquarium has been set up for a week now and my ammonia level is about 0.25, nitrite level is 0, nitrate is 20, alkalinity is above 300 and ph is between 8.0 and 8.4. Any ideas how soon I could bring in some new fish? Thanx!

Nice! What kind of live rock is that?

Live rock

If you mean the last piece of rock, I got it about a year ago off a beach on the Queen Charlotte Islands. It has been sitting on a shelf until a week ago when I included it in the aquarium!

hi caneoguy,
Nice set up just thought i`d give a little advice to you before your little friend on the 4th picture down starts growing more friends that he is a Aiptasia and his name is Majano they spread fast once food starts hitting the tank & just like aiptasia anenomes they sting fish/corals & in time over take the tank i know they look cool but i started with one & ended up with 12 had to buy a product called joes juice to feed them & destroy them as they started to spring up in places i did not want them so be a good idea to kill him before his friends come along & gate crash your newly set tank

Yikes!

I will try to get Joe's Jiuce as quick as I can! I also have about 6 brittle worms...very small and very fast, but from what I have read I shouldn't worry about these guys as of yet, correct?

I think that besides need a "Little" more live rock...It looks fab...I like the aquascaping idea that people have of having the rock on one side of the tank and open space on the other side, it has a nice effect...Good luck, dont forget to bring all hell down on the aptasia..

Yeah make sure to get that Joe's Juice... I learned my lesson the hard way before...

When I first heard they needed to be removed, I put on a glove and just pulled it out of the rock... OR so I thought... I saw it grow it back from that exact same spot.. and this time with few more buddies.

As far as bristle worm... Some people actually claim that they are beneficial to reef tanks... while some claim that they sometimes attack corals and small shrimps... I'm not sure which is correct. What I CAN tell you though.. if you would ever want to get rid of it.. Add a dottyback to your tank. For me.. I haven't seen one since I added my royal dottyback about 5 months ago.

Prolly best to cycle with damsels or better yet a piece of shrimp or uncured LR instead of black mollies but too late for that now I suppose

I would not use damsels for two reasons...

1) is very cruel on the fish. To put something through a cycle really aint fair on a fish, it stresses them out badly because of the ammonia..

2) Really dont want to be having the damsels there when the cycle has finished as they will tend to take over the entire tank as their own territory...You just try and catch em when the cycle is done...No mean feat for any living person..

Use the shrimp or prawn method..Have a read through this sticky to help you out with running the cycle..

Omega - Please do not think i was being derrogitory to your comments, that was not my intentions at all...I just dont agree with using fish to cycle a tank..No offence at all intended mate..
