Great forum with some great info. Here's my question. Have a 36G corner tank that I recently set up. I seeded the tank with some gravel and plastic plants from our small betta tank (2G), and the cycling appears to be going well. My ammonia and nitrite levels are in decline and no nitrates yet, but I have noticed the formation of yellowish-green "stuff" on the white gravel and the other tank decorations. I'm assuming this is normal as it works through the cycling process but wanted to check. Is this a true statement? Will it eventually go away? I really liked how clear everything looked when I initially set it up with some great brightly colored stuff, but the "growth" is taking some of the "shine" off. If this is normal, is there a fish of some sort (like the bottom feeders like loaches) that will control it, or do I need to just live with it? Getting ready to relocate the betta, but want to make sure I don't have a water chemistry problem or other issue before I do. Thanks.

Fred

I'm about to get a 36Gallon Corner tank very very soon. Just thought I would mention it. I know that clouding in the water is normal for cycling but no idea about your problem. Though I'm the last person to ask because I haven't done it yet :) . Oh well just thought I'd mention I like that tank.

What you're seeing on the substrate is probably diatom aglae--very common, easily removed manually, and seldom long lived in a tank. In short--you can vaccum it out yourself, adding a fish specifically for it is a waste, since it will clear up on it's own as the tank establishes a balance.

got to agree with OG

I had it a first and it got a little out of hand as my gravel is dark. Vacum the area and most of it wil "pull apart".

A few Amano Shrimp can help clean up most types of algae and have been keeping my tank nice and clean
