Ok so I just got a new 47 gallon aquarium. I was going to put a "dinosaur eel" in it otherwise known as a "senechal birch" or something like that but the guy at wal-mart said it would not survive in a new tank and that i should add other fish first before adding him. is this true? and if so how long should i wait before adding him to the tank?

"Predatory, keep with fish too large to be eaten. Not generally aggressive towards other species of larger fish"
Obviously you'd have to stock your tank around these guys. They also get to be 12" according to this source. Also, I've never had any experience, but it's always good to start off the nitrogen cycle with hardy fish, or even better, the Fishless Cycle Method (as mentioned by Onikun, there's a sticky). I think the fishless cycle would be your best bet, considering the normal fish that are used for fishy cycles would probably be an expensive eel meal.
