New Betta - male or female?

omg, my crowntail is named merlin! how funny is that?

The males bettas my petco has been getting in have been having shorter fins so I'd agree, its a male

LOL that is funny...yeah when I was trying to think of a good name for him I actually went online under names and Merlin means "By the sea" so I thought that was so cool and the name fits him. My other betta's name is Alvin my husband named him why I have no idea lol. I got Merlin at Petco and Alvin at Petland discounts. Love em both!:grinyes:

I personally would have to say male (crowntail). Yes, females do have shorter tails, but the "spikiness" of this ones fins look like a crowntail to me. I could be wrong of coarse.

As far as females being less colorful that is not true, I have 6 females and everyone of them is colorful.

Here are a couple shots of my females...not sure if it will help or not.

this looks to be a male crowntail, just young still. like other posters said, look from underneath to see if you can spot the "spot", right behind the ventral fins. i can't remember the anatomical name, but it starts with ovi.... i think. lol, my brain is dead at midnite-thirty in the morn...

Once the fish is home, see if it starts blowing bubblenests, then you have a 99.99% certainty it is male, but my female makes teensy nests once in a while.... fish can be so confusing! another thing to try is putting a small mirror in front of the tank, most of the time males will flare at their reflection, but then again i've seen females flare too.....

i thing that you have got young males they can very easily be mistaken ,for females even good fishkeepers & aquarium owners can and have been confused sometime, when i started i got sold 1 male betta and 1 female ........ and the female turned out to be a male!!!! lessons got learnt!!

Are you talking about mine?? If you are...no, I know they are females.:)

Thanks guys for your help. I think the betta is indeed a male since I have seen no egg spot and he seemed to flare at my other betta. He's currently doing really well in a 5 gal hex
