New Betta...recipe for disaster?

Hi,

I've just added a Betta to my 30 gallon tank. The tank already had 6 harlequin rasboras, 3 diamond tetras, 1 german blue ram, 1 yoyo loach, 1 bamboo shrimp, 1 albino bristlenose pleco, and a bunch of cherry shrimp.

He's been spending his time hiding in the taller plants near the filter, and when he comes out he does a lot of posturing and charging at his reflection in the glass. At one point he charged at my shrimp.

Is this normal adjusting and he'll settle down or does it sound like he's particularly aggressive?

I have another betta that I put in a 6 gallon vase with floating plants and a small heater. I could switch them out, but I don't want to cause any more stress to everyone than necessary.

Thanks!

he's beautiful! i don't really have any advice but i wanted to ask you how much you paid for your albino BN pleco. i'm interested in one but everywhere i go they have to be special ordered. no one can give me a price until it comes in.

It all depends on his personality. One betta can live with fish, one will chew the other fish out. Just give him a week, have a close eye on him constantly of course and you'll find out soon enough. On a side note, are you feeding the other betta? I hope you're not just thinking he'll eat the plant and dosen't need food or filtration.

He's very pretty BTW.

aggression

Since he was added last he may just be trying to cut out his territory. But as I am quickly learning despite all the advice and professional opinions fish seem to individuals unto themselves, and apparently no one is reading all this technical stuff to the fish. They act as they will as was pointed out, it is always a good idea to keep an eye on all your fish. good luck he is a beautiful fish.

I agree w/ Aussie...most likely the first victims will be the cherry shrimp bc they are smaller and easy targets...watch him and learn his personality and make your decisions from there

Yes, he will be fine. He's probably staking out his territory. He should settle down within a few days. I have betta pairs in my 20 gallon goldfish tank, a 16 gallon tropical community tank, and alone in a 2.5 gallon. They can pretty much be kept with any other community fish. Give yours a few days, and you should have no problem.
