I have a filter that takes the water from the bottom with an air pump then cycles it to the top letting the water spill out onto the top of the water. Should the water come out on top of the water or underneath? The bubbles seem to distract him from eating. When they are off he eats and when they are on and not being fed he seems to spend most of his time on the bottom.

So I guess logic would say what? Leave it off all together or just when he eats?

It should be a simple answer, I am not a dumb person, but don't want to do anything to stress the little guy out.

Thanks again.
One day I'll get it straight.

How long have you left it running? Might just be a matter of letting the fish get used to it--I have lots of water movement and surface agitation in my tank, and my betta still eats just fine. Could just be something it needs to get used to. Turning it off is okay--I'd just worry that I'd forget to turn it back on and that would be bad. Filtration is essential to a healthy environment.

I just got him on Sunday. I have turned it off for now and he is swimming at the top now, well not really swimming just hangin out. How long should I try leaving the bubbles on for him to get used to it. When they are on he hangs out on the bottom.? Is that ok?

I really appreciate your help, after loosing our goldfish after only 2 1/2 months I am really nervous.

Thanks again

Bettas are fussy by nature. Leave the filter on all the time--he won't get used to it otherwise. Hanging out at the bottom is not a problem--they tend to use the entire tank, not just the surface.

A betta is a much better fish for a small setup like this--as long as you keep the water clean, he should do fine.

Thanks

I feel better now. I turned it back on and he is still on top. I won't worry anymore. I will just keep his tank clean and watch him and enjoy. :dance
Thanks again
