New Betta!

I think I remember people on this forum actually saying that you could provided your tank's big enough. I was tempted but I never did because I don't really have a second tank to spare if they were to fight. I don't really want to house anything in my hospital tank.
 
On http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_behavior.htm, she describes a case where she successfully kept 3 males together in a 60 gallon tank. However, these males had been together as fry, and were from a less aggressive strain of betta. I would still be hesitant to try it though.

My betta lives in a 15 gallon tank with 7 black neons and 5 bronze cories. As I type this he's chilling in a little flowerpot cave that I made. He seems to like the cave more than the cories do! Its quite funny to see him poking his head out of the cave looking around at everyone.
 
My betta is in a 10 gallon and she is definately much more active and happy then when I had her in a 1 gallon bowl. She loves the bigger tank, and I think she likes being around other fish also.

How's this for a green betta?

woooooooooooow. that was one long article. i hope my betta has some cool habit(like watching tv, following me, etc.) my old one's habit was to hide behind the filter all day and only come out to eat. hey try this site, its got tons of cool colored bettas, some ive never seen before! :D

Betta would be happy in a bigger tank, just like any fish would, but IMHO a 2.5 gallon tank is a fine size for one, but I would not want to go any smaller! Silk plants are best for the bettas, they are not as rough on their fins, I had plastic with mine for a while, and they didn't cause any major damage to him, but he looks much better since I got the silk plants and he seems more willing to rest on the silk too
 
I think it depends. Bettas have little personalities and you have to figure them out. I had one that was miserable in a nice big planted 25g with a few peaceful mates.
I returned him to his bowl beside the computer and he was happy, he blew a bubble nest as a thank you note. He liked the company of us sitting at the computer.
On the other hand I just put a small blue betta in the re-done 25g and he appears happy. He swims quite fast. I thought they were slow fish before this.
 
The tricky thing with bettas when you get them from pet stores is that their colors come out a lot better when they are under better conditions. Several times I have picked up white bettas and then after a few weeks they turn yellowish and always get a few black flecks. And every time I am like, "this one is a real white." Oh well, I love them anyways. I think a lfs might have real whites, not yellowish whites, because they are like a metallic silver. Crowntails too. Nice fish.

Bettas seem like intelligent fish, very aware of your presence. Mine swims to the front of the tank sometimes when I am watching her and looks at me like "feed me!". She follows my finger on the glass too, something my guppies and tetras don't do. Bettas just seem generally more aware and interacting with their environment than most other small fish.

is it possible to tell what personality a betta has before you buy it? cuz i dont want one that just hides all day.
 
Hmmm... I don't know how you could unless they were in a tank instead of confined to a cup or one of those hanging things in the tank! But generally, given time to adjust, good food, a couple of plants (fake or not!) and some room to swim, they should be pretty happy :D
 
Also, a smaller, younger one will probably be quite a bit more active than an older, larger one. Usually the only ones in pet stores are pretty old but ocassionally you find a nice batch of young ones.
