New Betta!

is it possible to tell what personality a betta has before you buy it? cuz i dont want one that just hides all day.

They are all usually shy at first, after a week or so of getting use to seeing you and dropping food when they do see you, they will come to you, expecting a handout. Its seing you alot that helps them learn to recognize you. I've had this new one 2 weeks now, and today I saw him come to me for the first time.
At my LFs they usually have one swimming in the bigger tanks with various small tetras. Watch these ones for awhile, then make your choice. I don't think you can pick a "bad" betta. :)

Hiding all the time can be a sign of illness.

When Jellybean was constipated, he hid constantly in his little cave. But when he's well he's active and ignores the cave (before the sickness, I wasn't sure he even knew the cave existed).

He also hid a lot when he was in an unheated 1.5 gal. In the heated 5 gal, he's more lively.

i got my betta yesterday. hes white pink orange with clear fins and red spotted fins. hes happy. i gave him brine shrimp and crushed pellets(they're 2 big for his mouth). and do u think a betta would eat tadpoles?

My betta is doing pretty good in his ten gallon. At first he liked to stay in the back behind all the plants, but now he's swimming in the front a lot, but ocassionally darts into the back when there is a lot of motion.
