New Canister Filter Leaks!

i have heard enough AND experienced the FX5 to shy away. Without personal, direct hands on experience, no one should shy away from something without hands on experience. That's how the inch of fish per gallon myth, and others developed.

The internet is full of the air issue with FX5s. Yet mant folks consider them a god send while they are a pain in general.

Quite frankly, I do not believe the OP has the valve block seated correctly..but that just comes from my experience with them..hands on.

Shy away in not a very strong, critical, or demeaning term (reluctant wary). The FX5 is just another filter as far as I'm concerned and although I admit I cant help but be attracted to its stellar (like a star) performance , the FX5 like all filters speaks for itself in the long run ( 5 years now). ;)

I've gone through one C-220 and two C-360s in the past 12-18 months and will never do that again. I do have one C-220 running at present. It was sent to me by the manufacturer to replace the original leaking C-220. I gave up when the second 360 started leaking after only a few months. All leaked from under the handles. It was a very imperceptible leak at first, that grows. Be sure to put all of these filters (really all canisters for that matter) in some sort of shallow pan or tub and monitor closely. I ended up with damaged wood floors from the first C-220 leak as I did not have it in a pan. The C-series is a great filter and I liked it a lot, but went to Fluval as I was so unhappy with the leaking. Good luck.

Interesting. I've have my Marineland C360 for nearly a year (January), and I have had zero problems with it. And I got it used from someone on Ebay. I have no idea how long they had it. I heard lots of things about the C-series leaking, but it seemed like a lot of people just repeating this from a couple sources. I went for it since it was a great deal, and I set it up in a plastic tub just in case. The only time I have ever had water in the tub was when I was taking the filter down to clean it and released a few drops.

I'd keep an eye on that replacement part and maybe contact Marineland to see if you can get some replacement parts for the C220.

I've had zero problems since those first 2 days and I'm happy with it so far. I think I just didn't seat it in properly the first time, as Bob said. I'm definitely going to pick up a small pan to put under it though, just to monitor. I have wood floors like holyfish, and do not want to see them get messed up.
