Hello Everyone,

I just managed to get myself a new 60 Gallon tank and I want to make it a Cichlid tank.

I like the Lemon Cichlid or Neolamprologus leleupi and I would like to try to breed them so I need a few of them. Any suggestions for tank mates?

Princess cichlid (Neolamprologus brichardi)

Lemon cichlid (Neolamprologus leleupi)

These are what I was thinking of. What numbers should I look for? a pair of each would be too many or just right?

i don't think the n. brichardis will make good tankmates. they will raise hell for most other cichlids once they pair up and start breeding. beautiful fish and excellent caretakers though, just a bit over feisty.

how about julies? they are more docile. not too familiar with the leleupi, but you can research that easily. good luck.

Maybe I should keep it as a Species Tank? Buy Four Lemon Cichlids and leave it at that. Is that too many though?

I have Julidochromis transcriptus, Altolamprologus calvus, Neolamprologus brevis, guppies, and a clown pleco in with my leleupi. All works out okay except the male leleupi picks on every body but the guppies and the female julie; but, as long as you have a large enough tank and enough rockwork, I don't think it will be much of a problem.

I had a clown pleco in my 55 gallon with a pair of breeding Brichardi's..He must have gotten too close to their eggs or fry because he no longer has eyes. He is now living in my 38 gallon community tank. So, beware of breeding Brichardi.

The leleupis would be fine with even a breeding pair of birchardis. Just make sure you get a good sized group of them. I don't think 4 of them, and a pair of birchardis would be too much for the tank. You could probably get away with a bit more if you wanted. The birchardis will be nasty when breeding, but they stick to their territory, so the other fish are gonna learn you don't go near that.

The problem there will be that the Brichardi's territory will be 2/3's of the tank. Everything else will be jammed into the remaining space in the tank. At least that was the way it was in my tank, even with lots of caves and rocks.

So if you think that 4 Lelelupi and a pair of Brichardi would mot be maxing out the tank I could go for a pair of larger fish? I have very Alkaline water. I tested last night and found 8.2 pH from the tap, left over night, 8.2 pH! So what pair could I get?
