New Cichlid Tank- Use the 55 or the 90?

I am separating my fish and would like some advice. Essentially, I will create two tanks - one in 55g, the other a 90g. One tank will be anabantoids, the other cichlids. Questions:

1) I am torn on whether to put the cichlids in the 55g or the 90g...I'd like the larger tank to have a lot of plants, and I know the cichlids will tear them up eventually - on the other hand, I know these fish will be bigger than my anabantoids, so it may make sense to put them in the 90g.

2) Currently, I only have a couple Severum, about 7 to 8 inches...I'd like to add some compatible cichlids or fish from a similar region (I like the idea of having a tank represent a particular part of the world....) So what to add to my cichlid tank? I have the anabantoid tank figured out already.

Thanks...sorry for the long post(my first here)....I've been "lurking" here for a while, figured I'd make it official. By the way, anybody need advice on anabantoids or tetras, I've been around the block with them.

Thanks, guys..what about tankmates?

I'm thinking perhaps a couple festivum, silver dollars, or maybe some angels since they are from the same area and overlap in the water chemistry/light requirements. The tank is low and wide for a 90, so I'm figuring I have some real estate to provide hiding places for them...

Don't think I'd recommend the Angels. Severums play too rough. There are so many to choose from.. Take a look around your local shops, do some research on the ones you like, and go for it!

Are your Sevs a spawning pair?
Be carefull with introducing other large fish, as my Sev bullies other resonable sized fish badly. I def wouldnt go for angels as they are to slow. My sev killed the angel I put in with him. Perhaps Fire mouths of blue acaras, nothing to aggressive.
Also if you can introduce them to the tank all at the same time, if you cant do that but the other fish in first to settle then put your sevs in. I have found this to be the only sucesfull way to introduce pals to mine or he kills them!

Severums

There are three...they are all just shy of full-size...two male and a female....no pairing as taken place, but they are the right size for it to be starting. I'm hoping it will happen when I move them to the new tank, which will be much more suited to their desires....Acara's a good idea...I'll have to do some research on their habitat...in the last couple days, I've come to the conclusion that this tank will be a habitat tank replicating the Rio Negro in Southern Venezuala/Northern Amazon Basin.

I'll let you know how it turns out....
