I just got my first dempseys! i got 3 of them for 15 bucks! there about 2 inches right now, the guy told me to feed them freeze dried brine shrimp.. there all a graysih color right now? is that wha they look like when they are young or will it change when they get used to the tank? also the guy told me its best to feed them more than once a day, he said feed them and then when they eat it all feed them more, until they stop eating, is that true?

$15. for three 2" JD's, $5. each, thats a fair price.
How big is the tank your going to grow'em out in before possibly having to separate'em when they start to mature, perhaps just maybe you get lucky and two of'em pair up :)
They will develope their adult coloration as they mature and possibly a little when fully settled into their new home.
They will eat just about anything that fits in their mouths, brine shrimp, mini pellets, chopped or small earthworms, chopped/broken krill, broken carnivore sticks, crumbled algae wafers and so on... Just about anything...
i would soak pellets in a liquid vitamin two or three times a week to supplement their intake. A varied high protien diet is the best thing you can do for'em to ensure good growth and health.
You can feed them anywhere from 1-6 times per day depending on the size of the feedings, however young juvies seem IMO to do better with 2-4 medium sized feedings per day.
Give'em what they'll eat in 3-5 minutes and then perhaps a little treat.
They are greedy little buggers normally like most cichlids and will eat and beg, eat and beg, eat and beg as long as you let'em, feed'em as directed above and they'll grow like weeds.

sweetness, theyre in a 55 gallon, along with the fish listed below in my signature. ive been wanting dempseys for a long time and finally i have them! i fed them frozen brine shrimp last night, and then when i got up this morning i gave them some flakes, they gobbled those things up. the only thing i dont like about the brine shrimp is that it doesnt sink. only a few pieces sink and thats what they ate, the ones that sank, i guess they get used to going and fetching there food. anyways i love em already! :D

That mix of fish is going to be a problem very very soon, as the JD's mature they will quickly dominate and kill those fish.
Also JD's attain 9" and three adult JD's will overload the bio capacity of a 55gal, though you'll probably have to split'em up prior to that.

The gouramis should be fine for awhile. Three spot/gold and the kissing gouramis are tough fish! The kissing gouramis get huge 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) , and Trichogaster trichopterus reach 6 inches (15cm). At some point you'll have to add another tank. The swordtail will not be happy.

Yeah I agree that lot, we are talking a serious bio-overload. once mature you might get away with 2 JDs, but thats it!
Id watch for the gouramies when you first introduce your JDs, as I had an evil one which killed a juvinile Oscar, an adult Angel and seriously attacked any other gouramis!
