the only real home made decor you find in a marine system is DIY live rock....

Marine rock supports good bacteria and small species like worms, crabs, etc. Live rock is populated with this. Dead rock can support it but the good stuff has all died off and will need time and proxmity to these organisms to become live again.

Again, I think you might have meant to post your thread in the Freshwater forums. LOTS of helpful people there and I think I even saw a post in the photo forum where someone made their own ceramic decorations.
