Hey Lowryder! Floaters are tough with HOBs (sorry for not asking). You can section off a small area with airline as previosly suggested. Frog bit or water lettuce would probably be your best bet, but even those are prone to being a pain with a HOB filter. Let me know the next time you want plants and we'll throw some in for you to try for free.
You need to create a barrier to hold them in... Connect airline tubing into a ring and anchor with thread to the side of your tank. They'll grow roots (about 1-1.5") and be easier to corral... But free flaying is just asking for a mess.
This is what I do as well it has caused my one sad piece of hornwort to turn into a gallon sized clump in about two weeks.
Also if you raise the water level as far as possible so that the splash from the HOB is reduced it will help the duckweed scoot around the surface rather than being sucked under and clogging your intake!

ah, but after the first water change where you do not turn off the filter, you'll either corral or toss... Speaking from experience! : it was awful... Duckweed in my flame moss... Duckweed in the intake... *shudder*
