Hi,

I bought 4 Emerald Green Cories on Monday. One of them died yesterday, so today I went to Petsmart to get a new one. I came home just to find another one about to die :sad ... Ammonia/Nitites/Nitates are OK (0/0/5). I noticed that when he gave me the new one, that in the bag it started to swin on his side and backwards, so he gave me another one, and the one that died yesterday did the same when I got him... Any ideas what is going on here? They are in a 20G tank with white clouds (6) and otos (3). Are these too many fish for a 20 G and is that what is causing the losses?

I do not have a spare tank... I guess now I know why everyone here suggests having one... I managed to observe them more closely yesterday, and found that when trying to swim they seem to have no "feeling" for their body position in the water. They swim around their own axis instead of forward. When looking for fish diseases I found that there might be something wrong with their swim bladder? Should I medicate the tank?

Personally, I'm reluctant to buy from Petsmart. It's really a store by store thing whether they have healthy fish or not. I'd take them back and look for another pet store who might have healthier fish. Although even the best store in the world gets a bad batch of fish in every now and then.

instead of a tank, you could just use a big rubbermaid container

How long should your quarantine a fish when you bring it home? I, too, do not have a spare tank. I have added all my fish straight from the store. I use a LFS vs. PetSmart or PetCo (there are always a lot of dead fish in their tanks when I go to look at things). To have a QT tank, wouldn't it have to be set up all the time so the water is heated correctly and the readings are all good?

try and do a search about QT tanks in the general section, or just go back several...pages I know they just had a question about setting one up and it got to be 3-4 pages long! But in general if you keep extra media in your filter, like sponges, you can just about cycle a QT tank instantly. Also, I would never buy fish from a tank that had dead, sick, poorly colored, etc.... fish in it. You can never be sure if they are stressed, diseased or what!! Its better to wait to buy fish and find them from a tank in which all of the fish look healthy!!!
