I have a 90 gallon with a Fluval 404. It also had a Hagen 402 power filter but in fiddling around with that, it seems that I have broken it. I've had the tank for maybe a month now and received it fully cycled with two fish which are a small clown loach and an opaline gourami. I also have 3 platies and some mystery snails and thats it. Hopefully I'm OK with having just the Fluval running until I get something else. Ultimately, I'd like to adopt out the loach, get some angels, a school of rummynose tetras and I haven't decided beyond that. What do I need for additional filtration? I would like the most quiet running option please.

If I were you, I would DIY an additional filter to which the water can come from the Fluval 404 this way. (I assume your Fluval has 3-year warranty.)

My Fluval came with the tank. Everything was used. It is 6 years old. I am not a DIY person so I can't modify it. I'm going to need to purchase something. I appreciate the suggestion though.

One more thing I need to know - is it correct that I should be providing filtration rated for double my tank size? If so, then the Fluval 404 is rated for 100 gallons so I need something that will provide for 80 gallons? Also, powerhead or another cannister - whats the difference? Finally, one option that I can't use is a hob because I have a custom canopy that is a tight fit with no hob room.
