I have a new 29 gal. planted tank with shrimp and fish. I want a bigger filter than the one that came with the tank kit. What does everyone recommend for this tank? I would like a canister filter any suggestions?

I would suggest an eheim canister but thats because i have one and it's great, much better than my other filters and easy to maintain.
On my 29 I have a emperor 400. its awesome and my tank is always crystal clear. is on sale at big Al's for 39.99 and you can not beat that price.

Since everyone is throwing out what they use, then I'll say a Rena XP3...though you could get away with the XP2.
Sorry Bnoble but i have to disagree i have two fluval canisters and they are both poo.
Over filtering is a good thing as long as you don't over do it to much.

exactly :lol: I put a guppy in my 29 and he did the back stroke. but I have a 400 emeroro and a 280 penguin . When my guppy are ready to go into the 20 ( there babies now) I will be taking one filter off so they can swim and not be pulled in every direction.
If you are not going to keep salmon in the tank, please take the XP2 suggestion and make it an XP1. I have a XP1 on a 29 and sometimes that looks too much to me. It is a great little filter though.
