Dont worry about the filter. As long as its in there it is better than not being in there at all.

Get some Prime, BioSpira, a test kit....and that should do it for now

You need a good conditioner that will neutralize any chlorine in your tap water, thats what the Prime is for. The BioSpira will hlep you with your GOOD bacteria tha tyou need to cycle the tank. The test kit is a MUST. Without it, you have no idea where you stand with reguards to cycling.

Someone's log set up in a spreadsheet & graphed. For whatever reason, that chart clicked in my head better than the articles I'd read.

Once you get the test kit, keep paper/pencil w/ it. Wish I'd kept a full log from the start.

Why is there only space behind the white one then?

i know this is a resurrection, but i have always changed mine by removing biobag thing, replacing the carbon in it, then gently lifting the sponge and holding it up against the biobag while lowering the media into place. its a tight squeeze but i find it workls good. that way i can put crushed coral (in my african tank) or whatever those ceramic bio-rings are called if i want added filteration.
Now i have the penguin 350, and i absolutely love it.
