Hello!

I'm going to start from the beginning, so bear with me please :) .

Last year I had set up a 5g sterlite tank on a bookshelf on one side of my room. At first the temperature fluctuated but for whatever reason after a while it pretty much settled at 78-80.
This year I changed it out for something clearer and used the same filters (a Tom's internal filter rated 1-5g, and a small sponge filter supposedly for up to 15g, but probably for more like 5g).
Again like the first one (it is nearly the same size gallon wise but a little smaller, unfortunately it was all I could find that would fit there), the temperature fluctuated some at first but then 'settled' at about 80.

Last week (or the week before? erm... recently) I changed the sponge filter out for a retrofitted aquatech 5-15 and just used the sponge from the sponge filter as the prefilter.
(The aquatech was used, I cleaned it up - no soap - put in a new cartridge, it didn't have a sponge so I used a spare sponge filter sponge and added a small 'bag' of pfs - my own design/experiment - a little 'bag' (stockings) of carbon, a baffle, and later to slow the flow even more and keep the shrimp out of the hole in the bottom of the prefilter I tied a piece of stocking over the intake with a knot over the very bottom and then put the sponge (prefilter) back on over that (my wee betta much appreciates that). I also had to cut the intake tube shorter to fit the tank.

All that to say, lol, after changing out the sponge filter for the aquatech (and the heater is UNPLugged) I noticed that the day temperature of the tank rises from 80 to 88. This happens every day and it has me worried. I know a stable temperature is important.

Why is the filter making the temp change so drastically??

The odd thing is it is actually hotter in the room at night - when his (betta's) temp stays about 80 and cooler in the day (the only time the air conditioner is on unfortunately :/ ) when his temp is getting so hot. I find this very odd.
(Of course I also found it odd that it was staying at 78-80 when the room temp was changing per normal. very wierd.)

I suppose it could have something to do with circulation?
But the tom's filter seems to circulate the water fairly well by itself.

Oh, the room temp is 80 (rarely and I wish) - 86, usually 84-86 the most.

The light bulb was flickering this morning, could it have anything to do with the bulb being about to blow?
It is a new fixture (new to me that is, I bought is used for $2 from a store getting rid of their stuff), it uses an 17" t-8 size bulb, I think 14 watts.

Help?

Thanks. :)

What was your old fixture type and light wattage?

Not knowing 100% how the aquatech works, it is possible that you are picking up heat from the filter pump, particularly since you have a small water volume, but this is pretty unlikely. Touch the pump housing with your hand. If you can hold onto it without discomfort, I'm doubting you have the potential for 8 degree F increase there.

My guess is it is your lighting, particularly if there is no space between the light and the water's surface. Your light is off during the night when the tank is cooler, and on during the day when the temp rises.

the filter feels ok.

It's the same light fixture I've been using for the past...5? months. When it had a stead temp of 78-80 it was the same light fix.

That's why I was kinda thinking better circulation... maybe?
Perhaps there were warmer spots before and I just had no way to detect them (being away from the thermometers)?

The bulb just blew, so I've rigged up a (clw? twisty type) flourescent above it for now (10w? I have to look..) It doesn't put out near as much light as the long one though.
But maybe i'll see a temp difference. We'll see.

Does the tank get any direct sun during the day? I'm thinking maybe as the sun angle changes during the year it's getting more sun and that is pushing the temp up? Is there anything else near it that could be putting out heat?

I'm sorry, this question always makes me giggle. I work nights and can't sleep with any light. I'd say my only window is blocked about 99%. I have a curtain then blinds, then a blackout curtain spread above over and down past the window, followed by my orginal curtains - towels- and then some pretty beads to finish. :grinyes:
I might have overdone it a little, lol.
So no, sunlight can be ruled out.

Is there anything else near it that could be putting out heat?

hmmm... I will have to check on this to be certain. I don't think so, but the tv is kinda near... but I don't use it often (it's analog watching doesn't do much good lol).
It's worth checking the next time it's on, but that's not a daily thing so it couldn't be the regular culprit (I'd already checked to make sure it normally doesn't put out any heat when off for another reason.)
That's the only thing I can think of nearby that puts off heat... except the 1g is kinda near, the hood gets hot, but it's been in the same place/relation to this tank the whole time - even when the temp was stable.

It all started when I switched the filter, if it doesn't have something to do with that, then something that happened at the same time.
... That's the only change I've made though.

And as for the duckweed on my elbow, I'm sure I do, lol. That's probably not the only place either... ;)

Even with all the lights off it still went to 88 at night.

:/

If everything else is the same then it must be your new filter.

but, why?
lol

The filter works on electricity, no? A by-product of power usage is heat. Water conducts this heat away from the filter and the water temp rises.

oh dear

maybe I could try sticking an ice cube in the filter in the mornings??
that's all I could think of at the moment lol
