Just got a Fluval 205 canister filter setup in my 55 to take over from my cruddy UGF i had running before. Didnt all go smoothly as i put the rubber seal in the wrong place and ended up with a few litres of water all over the cabinet/floor/powerboard/me/my dad.

But now that its working im very happy with how quiet it is.

A question now!

Im going to setup a diy co2 kit tomorrow and know that water surface agitation is bad as it will let lots of co2 escape. Does that mean i shouldnt run a airstone at all ? Will the fish get enough oxygen without a airstone running ?

The plants will provide the oxygen for the fish while the lights are on, after dark you could have an airstone set up on a timer to come on when the lights go out.

The exact setup will depend on how heavily planted the tank is and the fish load.

:iagree:

if youre tank is only moderatley planted, you shoudlnt need to run CO2.

adding an airstone can acctually ensure that the O2 and CO2 are balanced (according to the article in AFI) in a tank and wont harm the plants. it gasses off any extra CO2, but it also gases off any extra O2.
