NEW FISH~Pelviachromis taeniatus"Moliwe"

On Monday,I finally decided I should get the fry out of there. The numbers were starting to decline and I didn't want to lose all of them. Although I was only able to get six out of there and into a breeding net, I was still able to get six after all of these breedings. I went down to feed the fish after lights on and was able to see the females having a "shimmy war". After 30 seconds or so, the dom. female went back to her "man" and started to shimmy again. She is starting to color up again as is the other female. So with a little luck, it won't be too long before there are more eggs. I think I will remane this tank the "love shack" since that is all that seems to be going on. More drama to follow, of that I am certain.

Hey rufioman- I will let you know when these fry are ready to be sold. I'm looking forward to sharing these guys with other aquarist.
 
Awesome fish! I found some online and really considering getting a few (only $15 each!!). I don't think they are the 'Moliwe' varient though., either way they are great fish. Good luck with your breeding efforts!

PS: Please keep us updated with PHOTOS (can't stress PHOTOS enough :))

I will get some more pics up soon. I need to get in there and do some cleaning and such. It's just hard to do more than a wc right now. If I don't have eggs, fry or breeding going on I'm at work! I guess I shouldn't complain though. My male is not quite 2" and the female is just under 1 1/2". So they are still young.
 
It's been a while since I've updated, so I figure it is past due. I separated the 6 fryand put them into a 10 gallon that I had laying around with a HOB that i put some established media in. I haven't seen more than four at a time but I do have several plants,driftwood and a big clump of Java moss. Iv'e been feeding crushed flake but I just got some hikari first bites so I will be feeding that from here on out. They have been growing nicely.
I removed the other pair from my 20 since I was going to sell them to a member here when I went to Minneapolis the first week of the month. Needless to say the weather didn't cooperate that week. I'm glad I thought ahead and took a wc bucket,heater, air pump,Prime and food with me. So the stayed in the bucket for four days and I didn't let the maids in to clean the room since I didn't want anything being sprayed around them or someone being nosy. They made the trip back home just fine and I put them in a 15 gallon that has a L.dorsigera and 10 habrosus. They settled in just fine after I made another cave to put in the tank.
Nothing happened in the 20 for the first week or so. Then that pair started digging out the cave( I did a major change since I was having algae issues and ended up moving their cave around). The female colored up again and got her bulge in the belly but nothing else was going on. I was going to go pick up a mirror tomorrow to see if that would entice the male into spawning mode by giving him some "competition". I can save those few bucks now. I went downstairs after lights on this afternoon and noticed the female looking skinnier. I shined a flashlight in the cave and sure enough, there were about 30-40 eggs on the roof of the cave.:nilly::nilly:
I will have more time the next few weeks so it won't be as long of a span between updates, and they won't be as long of posts either!
I am looking at getting a decent camera so I will get some (decent) pics up in short order.

Great thread and fish. They are gorgeous. A pair would look great in my planted 55. Let me know when you can sell some. Would love to give them a try. Keep up the good work.
 
FallenAngel- 15$ each is steep unless they are wild caught. I didn't pay that much per fish with express shipping.
I'm looking for a decent camera so I can take better pics.

RboydIV- These would be great in a planted 55. They are multitudes less aggressive than kribs( I was keeping 2 pair in a 20long). Plus they stay smaller and breed just as readily as kribs do. Add to that the coloration and it is a win/win/win situation.
mikeynike- You are justified in loving these fish. They are the best dwarf that I have kept to date.
rockhoe14er- Thank alot!!! I'm glad that vthey finally bred without any intervention on my part. Not that I would be against it , but the fact that they did so once the settled in speaks volumes for this species and variant.
If anyone has the chance and desire to pick up a dwarf species, I highly recommend them. I will update as needed and hopefully get some BETTER pics up soon.
I do still have 4 fry that are growing out in a 10 and am looking forward to having more grow out so that I can share them with the AC community!!
