They are hardy and energetic. In a 33 Hex they preferred to occupy their own space (rather than school) and were somewhat aggressive towards each other. I put a small group outside to live for the summer with the goldfish in a small garden pond. They blended in well which made it hard to see them, however, I could see gold flecks streak by the surface at feeding time. I will be bringing them back in next week before the weather gets too cold. Curious to see how much they have grown while living outdoors (more space, natural foods, etc).
mine seem to school but not overly tightly, they are rarely available in my area but the store I found near where I am working this year has local bred one almost all the time.
as far as the name in the wild they are effected by a parasite that turns them gold. tank raised specimens are generally silver in color sometimes flashing a more gold depending on the light. they also have 2 thin midline stripes one blue and one black with a black dot at the tail base.
My Petco always seems to have a group of these. I'm never happy with that particular store's condition of their fish but I have considered many times getting their gold tetras. I just love that shine they have.
yea they are really awesome fish and I have not seen them before a few weeks ago. i have blue leds on my tank so they really soak up the light well. here's another pic. Anyone bred these before?
I will probably attempt it as I generally try to spawn every fish type I have at least once. From what I read they are rather easy to breed as far as tetras go.
