Are to small feeders enough to drive a new tanks ammonia up to the 4-5 ppm area.....i started up a 55 gallon tank for goldies and it has two filters rated at like 60 gallons a piece on it...and i did put a filter from a well established tank and a piece of rock in it......i did a 50 percent w/c yesterday and im going to do anouther today to get the ammonia down even further

Apparently you're doing something right, because you haven't been flamed yet like I was for keeping two goldfish in a ten gallon tank.

Heck, they look like they're quite happy. I wouldn't argue with them.

Probably you're safe if the fish haven't died yet, and they aren't showing signs of stress, or behaving strangely.

Maybe for now. Hasn't any one filled you in on the evil results of stunting?

Iv'e seen fancy golds in a 5g hex, they looked happy, weren't behaving strangely or showing any signs of stress, but they'll be lucky to live more than 6 months. The ammonnia poisons the fish, but I doubt that would be much different than the conditions at many fish stores feeder gold tanks (horribly overstocked and amonia is probably through the roof). That being said, if the original poster wishes to keep the golds in optimum health, daily water changes will be nessisary until the bacteria builds up, and a larger tank may be nessisary, once they increase in size.

A larger tank? oh no these are feeders and im aware of the size they can achive but they are not the disired fish for the tank ......you cant flame me for keeping goldfish in a 55 gallon tank with 2 large filters and areation sp ...im just trying to figure out how 2 feeders and cause so much ammonia...has anyone use those grey chunks that soak up ammonia? or ammo-lock its suppost to convert the ammonia to less toxic easier takeing out lumps

so pretty much you're experimenting? i only buy feeder goldfish and they've all done well for me in my pond, the only time i've had deaths were because of algae killing chemicals. i've kept 6 goldfish in a 10g WAAAAYY before i knew better and learned from the ppl here on AC (and articles, and CW profiles) they started off at like 1.5 in. each and grew to like 5 inches and then had to be moved, thus my first pond, which actually contains the same amount of water your curent tank does..hmm..

Why on earth are you trying to get 5ppm amonia in a tank? If you want to kick start a cycle this way, just go BUY some amonia and add it manually. If there are fish of any kind in there you should have the amonia and nitrite so close to 0 it might as well not be there. The cycle will still take place and you wont be harming the fish in the process.
