I went to a fish auction today and my BF purchased some guppies. They are currently in his 55G tank, but they are all swimming right at the surface of the water. Does anybody know why?

Its hard to tell without more info.

Doesn't sound like normal behaviour and they probably seem to be gasping for air / look like they want out the tank?

It would be really useful if we had the following info?

- did you cycle your tank, or indeed do you know about cycling your tank?

- what are your parameters; Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate levels?

Forgive me if you are an experienced hobbyist, but really need more info!

Guppies prefer to swim at the tank surface, especially if they don't feel secure. If you have some boisterous fish in your tank, they might feel a bit frightened at first. In my guppy tank, the guppies swim in all levels. In the tank with the flame tetras, they stayed glued to the surface.

Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10ppm, Ph 8.0...tankmates,

juvenile angels, spotted raphael cat, yoyo loaches, L208 plec, and an oto....they've been doing this since they were released in the tank. I am an experienced aquarist, I just don't have much experience with guppies.

Not sure I would have put guppies in with that mix.

This morning the guppies are happily cruising the tank.

Why do you say that rbishop? Is it bc of the angels? They are the only ones I thought might cause a problem.

The angels may very well eat them when they are big enough, and the raphael catfish will definetly eat them. They are very aggressive predators.

Your guppies were probably just under stress initially from the move.
