New Here (need mucho suggestions on setup)

i did alot of research with taking zip through the airport. I do do alot of flying so i am pretty accustomed to the way newark works. I am going to be bringing him in his betta bowl that i bought him in (pint size wih air hole in the middle) and i called continetal, they have no fish policy so there nothing agaisnt or for having him onboard so they said its fine if i can get ot past security.

I did read the TSA website and i can ask a TSA agent to have a seperate screening due to special circumstances. Special circumstances usuually have accompanying a loved ones remains, disabilities and others. I do think that this is as special circumstance and i will be going to the airport earlier than normal.

The plan to start off with is ti fill his bowl up with half a pint of water. I will approach TSA and say i have a special needs situation and have a seperate screening as to not create problems for a million other ppl. From there i will ask TSA if it would be approriate to send a smaple of zips water through xray and for any additonal tests to ensure that it is infact only water. IF they deny this, the goal will be to fill treated 3 oz bottles of his water and have it sent through in a 1 gal bag and then added to another pint size bowl on the other side of the metal detectors. From there i will scoop zip out with a net and move him from one bowl to the next. I will try and keep the water as similar a temp as possible so i will let the water chill a bit so everything is room temp. This is of couse the worst case scenario. I am hoping the TSA will be as sympathetic as possible to my cause as it is a live animal and there are no rules or regulations that TSA follows in regards to aquatic animals in their mediums. Either way zip will get through screening. I have found the loop hole which garuntees it and this is infact what TSA told me when i called them. They agreed that the loop whole with sending the water through oor purchasing water on the otherside would work. I do plan on keeping his bowl between my legs so that my bodyheat will keep his water at an accurate temperature.

I really do not want to ship him, i feel very...hesitant about it. I know its is done, but being a labryinth fish and needing surface oxygen, i fear that a day trip in a sealed bag may make him meet his demise. I have done some research on ppl taking their fish onboard and i have heard stories of ppl hiding them in a cooler and stating its dead fish and the fish go through and are sterile afterwards. I dont condone to this as i am very very very pro animal.

I will try to take all the gravel, all 25 lb's of it. The filter thats in my tetra whiser is the bio bag, i dont think that would work too well with the eheim canister. I suppose i could bring the filter to help introduce the new bacteria to the tank for time being, that would actualy be a very good idea and i think i will take u all up on that. I can keep it in a zip lock bag and dump alil water in to keep it moist.

I been working through all the ideas and i appreciate all ur input. Alot of it is very useful.

I did check out craigslist and i did find about 4 listings of fish tanks in the phoenix area. All well priced and i am sure i could hagle it too. Most of which are 55 gal and up bow fronts, woot.

Heres a couple pics of my tank that i took tonight. 10 gallon tank and one betta named Zip to rule it all

wow you love your betta very much to go through that thats totally fish keeper thumbs up good luck dealing with the air port

ok so i changed my mind. Craigslist is a great idea. I didnt realize how many options i have. Holy ****, i might end up with a 100 gallon tank at this rate LOL. Or a bow front for cheap woot.

I love that you are taking your fish with you to school. I got together with my old college roommate last month. She saw my beautiful tank I now have in my home and she said she should have know it was coming, since I insited on keeping a tetra tank in our dorm room 23 years ago!
You may want to rethink the 25 pounds of gravel. Airlines are now charging for extra weight in luggage, even carry-ons. They are also extemely strict with the 3oz of liquid rule. I recently checked their site. You cannot even bring a 6oz bottle filled with only 3oz of liquid. All the 3oz containers must fit into one quart-size zip top bag.
Maybe you should have a plan B to have Zip sent to you if necessary. Good luck!

i am getting labeled 3 oz bottles. The way i look at it is, send my mom through with my bottles, out it in a new container and move the fish. There isnt anything against that.

sounds good

HAHAHAHA yeah right, i would never ever take the filter media and HOB that i have now. That lil tetra whisper is ok, if i was staying here and had to keep this 10 gal tank, i am pretty sure a canister filter would be in my future. None the less, a canister filter is in my future with whatever tank i get.

I talk to a guy in a place called a reef encounter in my area and he said he uses an eheim classis canister along with a HOB. He says that the canister is really good for purifying and cleaning while the HOB helps to further clean up the clarity of the water and keep it crystal clear. Any thoughts on this
You do not actually have to USE the media other than to seed your new media in your new filter. It will make the process go a lot more smooth than putting Zip through a cycle, which is going to be painful to him.
