I picked up a new betta from coolbettas on Ultimate Bettas. It turned out that he wasn't that far from us, so I went to his house and saved on shipping.

He's a gorgeous HM butterfly with a gray/blue body. His fins near the body are mustard yellow and then are blue on the outside. I put him in his new 5.5g tank at work this morning. It has a mixture of Flourite Black Sand and Black Blast sand from the hardware store (about $7 for a 50 pound bag!), mostly the Black Blast. It has some crypt wendtii bronze, an Echinodorus bleheri compacta, and ludwigia glandulosa. I'm thinking of ordering some marsilea minuta and maybe some marimo balls from Bob's Tropical Plants (mgamer) to round out the foreground.

I've got a Tom Dive Clean mini for filter, and I'm deciding on what heater to get. I had a 7.5w from a previous 2.5g, but it's kinda inaccurate and the suction cup is missing, so it can't really be used. Any replacement suction cup I can find is too big to fit around it and lets it hit the glass. The light is a 27w desk lamp.

Here're pics of the new guy and the tank. Oh, and I'm gonna rearrange the plants a bit.

He's beautiful.

NIce..

I always wanted to breed these guys. I never have any luck though. I can't even breed the veiltails right.

Congrats!

Thanks everyone! Sorry for the kinda crappy pics, they're from my phone.

I've got a glass top ordered from Drs. Foster & Smith (not carried in that size by LFS, cheaper online) as well as a few other things I needed/wanted.

I'm still deciding on some plants and stuff to order from Bob's Tropical Plants, but I'm hoping to get that ordered by next week.

I also added some more MTS for the sand and a zebra nerite, all from my 75g community at home. I also added a Tetra submersible adjustable 50w heater. If that doesn't overheat the tank (they seem to run cool for me, though), then I'll probably keep that instead of buying another new heater. This one was an extra, new in the box.

Thanks! Yeah, the heater is adjustable, I just don't completely trust it because it was given to me. It looked completely new, but I'm not sure. Especially since I noticed the black grid looking stuff on the outside of the heater was peeling off a bit. Might replace it just for that since I don't want him accidentally choking on it. He tries to eat anything floating around.

It was Menomonie, WI, nearer to Eau Claire. It's not on the Illinois border. He does ship bettas, and he had 2 halfmoons left (really beautiful too) and lots of HM plakats. He should have more halfmoons soon. He has an amazing breeding setup.
