Just finished my new hood last night for my 50g tank.
Total cost of project including lights and taxes was just under $100. Currently holds 2 40 watt flourescent tubes (one Philips plant and aquarium and one Philips daylight deluxe 6500k), but has enough room to add another single flourescent tube if it turns out to be too dark to work with plants yet.
I used a cheap circular saw and a 14.4v cordless drill for the project. Entire project was made from one 1x16x8 piece of laminated pine and one 1x10x8 piece of pine.
