new ideas for tank decorations

My caulking gun is always loaded and looking for things to stick together. After looking at overpriced driftwood that was never the right size or shape, I decided to make my own with a plastic coat hanger, a toaster oven, polymer clay and dried spanish moss. The result wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it's a start.

Cut the hanger and bake at 265* F until somewhat pliable (about 15 min)

Remove with pliers or vise grips while warm and bend into desired shape. It will still resist, hence the vise grips. If it doesn't look right, pop it back into the oven and try again.

Additional smaller branches can be made with clay, but this provides the bones. Fit pieces together, but don't glue yet. Cover pieces with clay and bake again at 265*F for 20 minutes.
Use silicone to attach branches and moss, if desired. I also glued a large flat rock to the base.

Thanks so much, Ducatigirl! I'm trying to find something around the house that bends a bit easier and still safe for aquariums.

I like that! I'm trying to find the right piece of wood to make a treelike structure for my tank =]

I also used some rocks I found in a drainage ditch on my campus. They make awesome live rock since were like 5 miles from the beach I think they came from the ocean.

did you have any leeching problems with the rocks?
I found some too, but I read up on the stuff that can leech out, cos theyre so porous.
I got hydra I think from some rocks from a muddy river bed.

you're welcome Jannika.
Have you thought about a cheaper brand of hanger? like from reject shop or something?
I really want to do that.
Do you need a portable stove like that? does it smell alot when baking?
