I've been out of the hobby for about 3 years now, and am jumping back in with a 55gal a friend was keeping for me and a few white clouds to start with. I was just wondering if there are any really innovative new products and/or plant and fish species out there. When I left the hobby aquariums were starting to get more attention, and new and helpful products were showing up. Is there anything new out there that's crazy awesome or even just really fun?

I was in the same position a couple of years ago, so I logged on to a few sites and requested product catalogs. That Fish Place and Dr's Foster and Smith are two.

i stopped at the hobby right around 2003...and i'm just getting back....nothing really changed. The boxes for the Aquaclear HOB filters did but that's it. :)

I dont know how exciting it is, and maybe you've already used them, but PYTHON!!! As far as i'm concerned the best single invention for aquarium maintinance.
Here is a link, wish the picture was better tho.

Never would have bought my big tank if i hadnt discovered this tool.

I agree, the water changers that attach to the sink are a major improvement for those doing manual waterchanges. Definately worth the cost!

The only thing better than these are the DIY continuous or completely automatic water changers, which are tough to justify on small tanks, however worth while on larger tanks because they require tapping into your household plumbing.

The other major improvement I have seen in recent years is increased accesibility to good information on a wide variety of aquarium topics via the internet.

Thanks everyone! I also noticed that eheim is coming out with an electronic filter that tells you when to change the filter etc. Very exciting :)
