New lights!! Tanks overheating HELP!!

84 isn't horrible no. There are many that believe a range of temp is better versus a constant 1-2 degree constant because the corals will be more forgiving of a temp difference.. If your's have been at a constant the increased temp could be what is bothering them.

With that said..I'd still go get some fans.

I have to agree with noskimmer, it might be the sudden intensity change of lighting - that does not help at all. If you still want to contol the temperature, i agree with all the above, using Computer fans to generate a draught is the cheapest way, chillers are very expensive. ps one fan blowing and one sucking will create a massive draught. I use this principle in my sump cabinet. really works.:)

hi brouther its very low for us.Pakistan is very hot country.90 degrees tempu is easy.we have all kind of fish.my aqu tempu is 84 or 82 degrees.but previous tempu is 96 degrees my damsel is died.so i put fan and my aqu tempu is 84 or 82 degrees.put two or more fan one fan in that means throug air in high.second put fan out throug air out low.but try to put more fan.In Pakistan 84 degrees is perfect tempu.

I had a similar problem..found out the heat was in my fuge(in cabinet) my temp would stay at 84 my frogspawn did not like the warm temp..I installed a 120 mm fan in one of the holes in the cabinet(used for routing plumbing etc) it pulls the warm air out of the cabinet and the tank now stays at 80.

Hmm great feedback guys. Im going to get some fans today. I turned my MHs off in the meantime, so my tank is running on just power compacts until I install the fans. Thanks for all the help

Depending on how deep your tank is, you should also be able to raise them off of your tank. With 250 w Lights you should be able to reach the bottom still. I am not sure what the depth of your tank is, but its something to look at.

My tank is a standard 55 gallons. So its 48inches long 24 wide and I forgot the third dimension. The problem with raising them is that they already came with mounting legs that are about 5 inches over the water. Im not the greatest at building things and im afraid id just damage them or do something to make them fall if I raise them.

Can you post pics of the lights.. I'm pretty handy and might be able to give you some pointers.

I have my MH at 12 inches, which does raise the temp a little.. But between my boss and I we created a mounting system in which I can raise or lower the lights as needed.

Oh they are only 5" over the water? I have the same size tank and (2) 250s as well and I keep my bulbs about 13" off the water surface.

Thats why I was wanting close ups of his lights or even if he can give me some manufacturer specifics so I can go out on the web and look. I have a buddy that took wood T's drilled holes in the lights and used that to suspend them.. When people start talking heat and MH's the first thing I think of is that they used the standard mounting equipment. And with it being a 55 he should be able to raise them to a foot and still get enough light on the bottom of the tank for anything he wants to raise.

But I would also like to know his living situation, permanent (own the property), temp (rent ect) as that way I can give him ideas.
