new marine setup cloudy

I would run the skimmer and have it help skim out all the extra proteins in the tank. I have always turned my skimmer on the same day my tank was setup. Skimmers do have a break in time where you will have to play with them until they slim up.

This is exactly why I say don't need to. You want those dissolved organics to decompose and get the cycle going... it kind of defeats the purpose if you skim during a cycle.

what is chaeto and when should it go in the sump does that need 24/7 light aswell

Macro algae that looks like wiry green afro. Easy to manage. Goes in Refugiums. (spelling?)

24/7 lights = its going to constantly export nutrients

The other way is to have it lights on when display lights go off.

Highly discourage 24/7 lighting on cheato in a fuge because you will almost be guaranteed to have cyano growing in short order. I tried it for a week and my cheato was covered in cyano. Luckly cheato is easy to take out and rinse in a bucket of old tank water, but still, learned that it isn't a good idea to light a fuge 24/7 because it is hard to get enough flow to counter the constant lighting. In a refugium you want the flow pretty low to give the cheato a change to export the excess nutrients.

I run my fuge light 8 hours during the night, not completely "alternate" to my main lighting because that would equal 14 hours a day of fuge light if I did that, but it is on when the main lights are off.

I did the 24/7 thing before to. My problem was not cyano at the time. It was overgrowth and having to prune it too often.

I recall someone posting something on reef frontiers about someone with a Aptasia Fuge.... using a UV sterilizer on the out take end so that it remains in the fuge not the display.

Local dude here uses feather dusters ..a lot of them. Filter feeding ftw.

So many variations out there... I still thought the aptasia way was most cool of them all.

i wanted to put it in the sump so if not lit it would be very dark what do you recomend . is there anything else i should be doing and not meaning to sound daft what is this cycle im waiting for and how can i tell it has done it . i must sound extremely stupid but i dont want to make a pigs ear of setting this tank up
