Hello!

We're (my coursemates and I) planning to set up a tropical marine tank for a college project, and we've been told to put together an equipment list.
So far we've been given a large aquarium + hood and lighting unit, and an undergravel filter, we're just not sure of what kid of substrate we should be using etc!

Any help will be appreciated!!!

Thank you,

Sarah :help:

what will you be studying for the project? ie what will you be keeping in that tank? this will have a great impact in what you will need

I understand that you will be wanting to keep the cost down, but an undergravel filter really is an outdated solution, but it could work none the less.

Basic Kit you will

Heater
Thermometer
Hydrometer / refractometer
Salt
Test kits for:
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
Power heads for water movement

Make the UG filter a plenum its really not that hard, just dont use uptake tubes. I also suggest crushed coral gravel.
