I Just spoke to the pets store
the suggested 3-4 mollies to start, since that is teh fish we are going to go with.
Also was inforemed snails or bottom feeders should be introduced 2 - 3 weeks later.

all thoughts on mollies welcome

The mollies sound good for now. Stick with 3 of then since it's good match (1 male 2 females). The tank will spike (not too high) in ammonia after a few days, because the mollies will be producing a new, constant source of it. The bacteria will soon catch up. After about 3 weeks, the water should level off and then you can add the cories and snails.

The 1 inch per gallon rule is not a good thing to think about. Say you have a 20 gallon tank, so you can have a 20 inch fish right? Well that fish won't have enough room to turn around even in a 20 gallon tank. It's more like, don't overstock, in a 20 gallon, nothing over 3-4 inches, and make sure they get along. The bigger the tank, the bigger the fish obviously.:D

Hope this helps, and welcome to AC.

Edit: Forgot to tell you about live plants. If you really want them, then fine. They can be great, but sometimes they can be a big hassle too. Some people here, (don't exactly know who) have fully planted tanks with CO2 systems pumping extra Co2 for the plants into the tanks. I personally don't think it's good for a beginner fishkeeper (not to condesend).

My Mollies just had 3 babies

Hello again,
Well thanx for all the advice, I purchased four mollies about a week and a half ago and they are multiplying!
this morning i saw three black streaks at a closer look i have two females and one male.

the water condition have been consistant
Amonia spiked to 0.25 after the first week
i did a water change 1/3 of the tank
now it is at 0

ph has been hovering around 6.8 7.0
hig range ph test at 7.4
nitirtes at 0.25

The mollies have been fed twice a day no more

I have 2 males and 2 females with no bottom feeders yet
i will be adding several snails this week along with another water change

all advice to keep the little ones healthy will be welcome

By the way my mollies love the salt
i added 4 tablespoons of aquarium salt in my 20 gallon tank when i set up
after the first water change i added one tablespoon of salt

Thought i share
and need some more suggestion to lower the nitrites
bottom feeders and im thinking another water change with the babies in the tank

1 death 21 briths

Correction

Bad news I lost a mollie today im afraid it died 2 days ago.
I have a rather large ornament in my tank that can be hard to see into. The younger female mollie which was unseen for 2 days died in there. :shake:

Unfortunatally i miss read the signs the day before of her not eating.

This caused my nitrites to spike up to 0.50 and created a really bad odor.

I preformed a water change of a little more than a third of the tank along with adding 1 tablespoon of salt along with water treatment. Along with cleaning the filter.

The nitirtes dropped one level to 0.25

The fish seem happier now and are shaking there heads like the were for the past day or 2

note: this is the second water change in almost a week,
(6 days).

I purchased a fish net breeder and seperated the fry from the others.
all the fry seem to be doing well.

The correction was that earlier she had 5 fry the number is 21

My question is other than the fish dying the conditions of the tank seems to be in order. How many more fry should expect if any and whats the time frame.

I belive i got a sick fish from petsmart, the fish that died was a younger female and did not eat as often as the other fish in the tank.
