Just got this at the LFS tonight. Does anybody know if it has a certain name? He did say that it would multiply. How is that. Any info would be great as this is my first coral piece!! Sorry the pic is so bad as good as I could get.

Looks like a basic purple mushroom. They reproduce fairly quickly, and in a few months you'll probably have a bunch of them.

I have a pretty dumb question for ya. Is an my anmeone considered a coral? And how do these mushrooms go about reproducing

An anemone is not considered a coral, however...mushrooms are also called coral anemones so that could cause some confusion.

Mushrooms can reproduce several ways. By shifting over and leaving a bit of their stalk/foot on the rockso that the leftover stalk creates a new mushroom; by stretching apart until it becomes 2 separate mushrooms, etc.

We can also propogate them ourselves by fragging. Fragging sometimes mimics what I just described above by either slicing through the stalk horizontally, or by cutting through the crown in pie shaped wedges. I've heard tales of people putting them in a blender and pouring the puree into a tank. I'd not try that last one personally.

That isn't bad at all. I use superglue gel to glue corals down all the time. I'd not have glued the mushroom itself though, but rather a rock or shell it was attached to. Not because it would be all that bad, but because soft corals like that often slime to the point of making it difficult to use an adhesive.

No that is how you can do it. We use Loctite Gel Super Glue. It's like Super Glue but thicker.

Several ways. You might want to do a search on the Propogation forum here. You'll see descriptive posts with options like

  • using a rubber band to hold it to a rock
  • needle and thread to sew it to a rock
  • toothpick to spear it onto a rock
  • tulle (bridal netting) to hold it into place
  • leaving it in a container within the tank with sand and or rubble
Each of these generally take just a few days for the mushroom or other softie to attach itself. They you can remove the temporary hold. If it is now on rubble you just glue that to where you want it.
