New nano reef diary

Updated pic

Thought I'd post a picture from today. The Xenia is doing really well - one stalk is splitting into three, the other is splitting in two and looks ready to attach to the rock next to it.
I got a little Tulip anemone from work, thought I'd try it out - from what I've read as long as I don't feed it it shouldn't become too much of a pest. It's very pretty (pic doesn't show the colours), a grassy green with bright pink tips.
I'm still battling cyano, but it's just a tiny bit and I think I'm starting to win.
Without further ado, here are a couple pics :)

Full tank shot at feeding time (HOB turned off):

Looking good Blinky. Are those astrea snails staying upright? Your rock is more low profile than mine, I've got alot of peaks and I'd be afraid for them in my tank. I heard the xenia can become weedlike over time but too pretty to matter much. A big bunch must be impressive.
I think I'll go with the coralife 3000 skimmer, its a bit less expensive than the remora but I've heard good things on both.

Hi i just read your entire post lastnite and i was left with my mouth wide open and in total aww. I have been doin FW for a few years now and am ready to get into SW...iam an avid fisher man(dont kill me for this:)) but i also love to sit and admire my fish for hours and hours. iam amazed at how u did all that with a 14gal tank :)...this is my set up and questons to you.

i have a 30 galon long ways tank thats just sitting in my bedroom empty :(..i want to do SW setup and need hlp. what type of live rock should i get for a beginer and what type of coral should i look to get in the future?(do i need a special light if i want ither live rock or coral..i have florsecents in my cover right now). Iam also looking to put some snapper look-a-like fish and sum grouper look-a-like fish and need suggestions. i would be totaly open minded to put other fish types but iam not looking for super high matinace fish and not too too flashy colord guys.(as a side not iam also intrested in breeding any of the fish i get..eventually) i will be up grading toa 55 gal some day but for now all i got is my 30gal. i have a cover wiht a doubble filter(a wheel and a carbon bag) built into it,with two florsecent lights built into the cover also.would this work i know i need a jet and a protien skimmer but do i need to have a wet/dry filter?

srry to floood you with all these questions but iam really excited about this.

and other things i would need that i didnt mention plz let me know.

(iam 16 years old if that matters at alll.) iam a very good listener and will let yuo tell me what i need to do without guff..

ty for posting such a nice diary i love it....robert:0

SF, you're right on about the Xenia, I've read horror stories... then again, it's always good for a little credit at the LFS ;) My Astraeas are well behaved so far, no upsidedownies, but I'm sure one will do a swan dive some time. As long as they're near a rock they've always been able to get back up unassisted any time I knock them accidentally during maintenance.

Grouperman88, nice to meet you :) I'm so glad you like the diary, it's been neat keeping it and seeing the tank progress, as well as watching my own clumsy learning process ;)
I'm still so new, I'm not really qualified to answer all the questions you asked - the best idea is probably to visit the forums at nano-reef.com, you'll find so much information there on keeping a small reef tank, it's amazing. Do your research, then do more - I did a few things backwards because I should have done more reading first, but it's all a learning experience. You're bound to make mistakes, but the more research you do the smaller they'll probably be :D

Ganjero, nice to meet you too :)
Yep, I've got a Prizm deluxe skimmer - at work we have only Prizms and SeaClones (which are apparantly completely useless) so I opted for the best we had. Turns out, it's not much better than a SeaClone! It's working better than some seem to, pulling a little thick gunk and some brown watery skimmate, but I've actually ordered an AquaC Remora (in the mail, should be here in a few weeks) because I've heard a lot of good things about it as far as HOB skimmers for nanos go.

Diary wise there's not much to report ATM - the Xenia is splitting, the clown goby is eating pretty well now and taking pellets (Yay!), the cyano is under control and hopefully will be completely gone soon, so basically everything's ticking along as it should for now.

ok well thank yuo soo much for refering me to another site it hlps alot...i will be lurking on your post for a while to c the out come and ill post every now and then..hey if i ever get my tank going then ill posta few pics i have two questions lol..couldnt i just cycle ocean water for a few extra weeks then the normal? and are salt water tanks as hard as ppl say they are?

thnaks again and keep us posted

I'm finding the saltwater reef tank is not any different from f/w as long as you know the basics. The live rock makes keeping water conditions stable alot easier. Its alot more expensive so you should educate yourself before buying and setting up, so to minimize loss and improve yur chances of success. I'm a newbie too, but this is a whole new experience and it takes patience. Most reeftanks are at their best in YEARS.
I've had a coral banded shrimp for a month now, a Christmas wrasse for 3 weeks, and now a lawnmower blenny in the mix. My lights are in the mail to arrive this week, so soon some corals. Can't wait!

Right on SF, I want PICTURES when the corals come :D

Today is a good day for my little slice of the ocean *grin*. I was watching one of the marine systems, still feeling disappointed that we sold out of our YWGs before I could bring one home for my pistol shrimp, and then all of a sudden out of a clump of Caulerpa swims this gorgeous orange-spot shrimp goby (Amblyeleotris guttata)! I got store credit for some of my Crypts, so I did an even trade for this sweet little fish. The plants will go to a happy home where there's room for them (they're growing like weeds in my 65g, there's no more room at the inn!), my boss makes a nice profit on them and I've got a nice new fish - everybody wins!
I arrived home later still beaming, to discover that the AquaC Remora I ordered arrived several weeks before I expected it to! Can't wait to install it tomorrow and start seeing what this thing can do... anyone want a used Prizm?
The fun STILL wasn't over! I dripped the goby for about a half hour, then introduced him to my tank. He dropped like a stone to the bottom, and just sat there for a few minutes looking bewildered. All of a sudden, out comes the pistol, bulldozing a pile of sand into the goby. He felt/saw the fish, quickly ran back, widened the entrance to his cave and then herded the goby inside - they're instant buddies! An hour later, the goby was guarding the entrance while the pistol worked :)
Some days I just love this hobby *happy sigh*
