I went to petco today in search of a cat toy and got to talking to the store manager, who is a good friend of mine, and the petco here has a new policy in regards to the aquarium dept.

Here is the policy as she explained it and I really like it: a person can only purchase up to 5 fish at a time, if something happens to that fish w/in 15 days of the original purchase date and a person wants to return it then they have to bring in a sample of thier aquarium water. If the cause of death was due to their aquarium water then Petco will not allow that person to purchase/exchange for more fish. Instead Petco will give them a "fish credit", once a week the person has to bring in a sample of their water and once thier param's are "normal" (ammonia 0, nitrates 0, etc) then they can use thier "fish credit".

Anyhow, just thought I would share that w/ you all.
Thanks!

As far as I know, the petco in my area has the same policy and has had it for some time now. Problem is I'm not sure that all the employees actually follow this procedure which of course leads to problems. For the sake of the fish, I hope that they do.

Ahh, I guess we are way behind times then! It didn't matter how many fish you purchased at one or if you brought them back w/in 24 hrs.; Petco would just replace the lost fish, no questions asked. Of course our Petsmart is the same way too. I hope that it stays that way and that the employees actually follow it.

One of the other LFS (not petco or petsmart) is so picky about who he sells his fish to that he won't let you leave the store with so much as a bag of his aquarium water. He wants to test your water, know what kind of filter you have, where you bought your previous fish, what kind of lighting you have, etc. I like him though b/c he really knows his stuff and he is honest. He isn't the kind of person to "tell you what he thinks you want to hear" to make a sale. That is where I go whenever I purchase my fish. He could easily make a person mad but I take him lightly b/c I know that he knows his business.

I don't like that 5 maximum, what if I'm stocking multiple tanks? Do they make exceptions in those circumstances?

My Petsmart doesn't require water checks, they just scribble down the credit for you and let you use it for your next fish. I have been having problems with keeping mollies alive after they give birth. Within a week they all died. I got replacements, and within a week after giving birth...dead. No water test, but the guy that sold me the last ones was there when I brought in the last bunch. I opted for other than mollies.

This is my first post, so I have to do some post padding.

did I mention that I have to do some post padding?

Ok, just kidding. No more of that, I promise.

the 5 max is a bad idea. you need to set a max for a certain tank, every tank is different and they can each handle different bioload additions. if i have a 75 and i want to add a school of 12 serpae tetras or something, that woudlnt throw off the tank, and yet adding only 3 or 4 small goldfish to a 10 gallon could crash the tank, so that part of the policy isnt any good. in the goldfish example it is their allowing a max of 5 that caused the chemistry in the tank to go bad enough to kill the goldfish, in which case it is their fault responisibility to give a refund.

My local Petco has this policy also...that being said, they will allow folks to get over 5 depending on circumstances.

I guess I should have made myself a little clearer, they only allow 5 depending on the circumstances, of course I don't know how a person could prove the circumstances. But when I was in there a lady came in there and bought a 5 gal hex and wanted to purchase a pleco and a whole bunch of guppies. I just stood there, and the girl that was on duty told her that after 4-6 weeks she could come in w/ a sample of water and perhaps purchase 2-3 guppies max. and the pleco wouldn't be compatible in the fish tank. The lady was mad, but I thought to myself better mad than get home and kill all of them and then return them.

I know that the few times I have went in to purchase fish they allowed more than 5 for me, but they also know that I have 55 gal. I have even adopted platies (and when I say adopt I mean it in the sense of adopting a pet) and they have never asked me for a water sample or anything. We live in a fairly small town so a person comes to realize quickly who they can and cannot trust.
