New Petsmart... shock and happiness.

yeah..
1) that video is crap
2) The betta's only live in the cups temporarily, and the blue water is *supposed* to be changed out once they get to the store, sometimes when its really busy though it may not get done until later. They also get water changes every other day so the water quality doesn't get bad.
It makes me so sad when people buy the itty bitty bowls to put them in though, I always try to steer them towards at least getting the 2G tanks with the airstone for the little guys. I once had a customer who complained very loudly about how inhumane it was for us to keep the betta's in cups, and then bought a little betta cup (I refuse to call it a bowl) that was like...1.2 pints (yes pints) of water for it to live in....sigh...
3) Dragon Goby's are the coolest fish ever! I love the weird fish we have, like the BGK, the Dragon Goby, Dinosaur Goby, etc.

i work at a petsmart and have for a while...

the betta thing was touched up upon, but yeah... we add the blue stuff to help keep them from getting stressed and diseased... we have to keep them in cups b/c it would be too hard to keep them anywhere else. the water still gets changed Mon, Wed, and Fridays.

the fish selection CAN vary from store to store but should mostly be the same. the older stores have more tanks and sometimes carry more fish... and every three months we change some "opportunity buys" that are only available for short periods of time. those are albinos, and rarities... and the fish are ordered by a pet care manager, so it's hard to say all petsmarts aquatic departments are all the same... some managers are better than others...

but bottom line, if any customer or associate complains about the treatment of animals, i assure you that it is taken seriously... especially if you contact corporate!! my advice is to tell someone who can fix a problem instead of spreading rumors on forums. that never accomplishes anything.

Ours is pretty good. Needs a bigger selection of fish though.

Lol, the video is crap because it shows a bunch of abbused hamsters, gerbils, etc.?

Anyway, I didnt mean ALL petsmarts and petcos, theres just many of them that are bad, not NEAR to all, prolly not even half, but there are deffinetly some "walmart bad" ones out there

Since posting this thread I've been back to that store a few times now and I have to say it's well kept. I did take a closer look at the bettas in the cups and the only thing that bothers me now is that the lids are closed.
The store is clean and well tended. The fish tanks are full and clean. Gotta go back today after I set up the QT. heh heh.

I worked at PetSmart for close to 2 1/2 years... The lids on the Bettas have to remain closed.. Bettas have a tendency to jump.. as most fish do when frightened. Customers think it is necessary to shake a Betta cup to see the colors on the fish. And they think it is funny to put 2 Bettas together to "see if they really will fight". They are suppose to be given sufficient air holes, unless the cup already has the pre-made holes in the lid.

the torrance petsmart has a clean fish section with good variety...theres a guy who looks kind of like sherman from american pie who kind of knows his stuff but is terrible at netting fish. the torrance petco is okay as well but doesn't even have half the selection the petsmart does

The last petsmart I went into had quite a selection of fish, and the tanks looked like they were well kept. There is a new store opening up here June 9 in DeKalb IL. This gives me the opportunity to have somewhere else to go besides Petco. I like having a choice. I dont have much choice when I dont own a vehicle. I also filled out an application. I am too much of a beginner to run that part of the store, but I will learn a few things and make sure the aquatic section is kept up with.

joker, I work in dekalb so i have high hopes for that one as well, especially since the petco's around here are terrible for fish. I see the site says the ninth, but I was by there last week and a sign on the door said the 4th, so I am a little confused. Good luck on the application. I was up at the rockford petsmart today (which is one of the best petsmarts i've been in, i just hope the new one is as good) and I see they are getting rid of their horse stuff, i am hoping that means more fish stuff but i doubt it.

Is it better to take an online printout into petsmart and see if they will order it instead of ordering it online and having it shipped in? will they even do that or is stuff like acrylic aquariums online only?
