Hi everyone,

I am in the processing of starting up a 20L planted freshwater tank. I have posted on the forum a few times about the plants and the stocking.

Now I'm writing about equipment! I am currently using a filter that I think will work fine for the new tank size. It's the one that came with my bookshelf aquarium. I'm using foam / bio filters for it.

However, I do not currently have a heater. The two that I looked at yesterday were:

Fluval E Series (the one that has the digital temp reading) 100 watt
or
Aqua Pro 100 watt

I'm not sure if there are certain heaters that are better for planted tanks vs not planted. Also, I read that the Fluval E Series is not fully submersible, but since I don't have a lot of experience with tank heaters, I'm not sure what the implications of this are. Would love some advice/direction if you guys have time.

Thanks,

Tania

I'm using the Jager 150 Watt for my 20 show tank. It's a bit expensive compared to other cheaper brands, but only a few bucks more than the Jager 100 Watt, and you'll be guaranteed to have enough heating power. Also it's fully submersible, which I've found helpful on numerous occasions.

Also the glass is very high quality, check this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbDFbcd8kA0

what would be the advantages to having a fully submersible vs the fluval e series?

In a 20 long, the vertical height is too shallow to have some of the heaters placed vertically. Therefore, you'd have to mount it diagonally or horizontally in order to get the required water coverage. I had my Jager 150 Watt in my old 20 long before upgrading to the taller 20 show, and it was too tall so I had to mount it diagonally and in order to get the minimum water coverage I had to partly submerge the top of the heater.

Ah, I see. I was concerned about the height. I think the fluval says 11" and the tank is 13" i'm not sure if that will fit with the substrate and everything, but if part of it sticks out above the water purposefully (the read out etc) then that might work.
