ok my main idea for this tank is to use it to learn how not to kill plants. lol

im gonna take my 10 gallon and put in a cheap filter and a heater find or build a hood/lighting thingy. then im gonna get some plants that are the closest to invincible there is and ima do a planted cycle. ima let it go for a while then get some biospira and amonia and help it along. THEN ima try to add a few more plants (i want this to be a mostly planted tank with 1 cave thingy) after its pretty much green and not dead (after its cycled) i plan to add lots of shrimp. and maybe like 2 ottos, and hopefully this will keep my occupied till i can get me a 55 G :)

If you stick with easy plants like java fern, crypt, anacharis and java moss there really is no way you can kill them unless you leave the lights off for months.

The real trick from what I've found is to have adequate light, but more importantly to have a steady light/dark period. The light timer is perhaps the most important piece of hardware in the plant keeping arsenal.

Good luck.

plant tips

good luck with the plants heres a few things i do in planted tanks. i use plexiglass for covers so what light i use more effectively gets to the plants. for ten gallon tanks i use 2 flourescent lights(15 watts each the 18 inch size). i also use less tap water and more spring water to keep the ph less hard . i use a $5.00 timer that turns on and off the lights so the light period is consistant and long enough. the java fern is a great plant ive had it for years it wont die. my crypts i keep planted in pots. and read articles on the particular plants you are keeping to better care for thier needs. good luck
