Hey!
:help: I actually posted these pics on monsterfish, and then thought it should have been here in stead...maybe? dunno. anyway, I was sold this puffer as a brackish puffer, but I don't know what type it is. It's eyes are blue, I don't think you can tell by the pics
I already linked him to my Pufferpedia. It has the face of a fahaka but some pale markings of a mbu. What did they call it at the shop? Definately a FW species.
Hey pufferpunk,
The store said he thought it might be a red bellied puffer. but from what I have read they have red eyes. This ones are blue.
FW hey? thats not great news. I only have the one tank and its brackish...have to bring him back to the store i guess. Too bad I like the look of him, and he seems to have a good personality
Thanks for your help. I'd still be curious to know what it is though
Here's a side profile of the mysterious little guy. The LFS will not take him back. Said the supplier had him as a brackish, he kept him as a brackish and he is doing fine as such. Especially if I can't tell him what it is. He figures it still may be a brackish
So far he is small. About 3/4 of an inch, not even half as big as my f8 . But he is a much more enthusiastic eater. Already tried to "taste" my 8 inch crayfish that the f8 never gives a second look to. And he is very social, always comes out to investigate anybody who looks at the tank and kind of performs for them. I know that sounds silly, but that is what he is like.
I checked pufferpedia, there are similarities wit the fahaka and mbu, but, I never really saw anything that really looked like him. He looks like he has little circular markings, but they are covered with a thick dusting of brown.
Well, Thank you for your help.
Must be some type of fahaka.
Some do tolerate brackish, guess this one does but best been in low salinity to be safe.
Looks well cute, I would love one
Great pics too, what camera did you use out of interest ?
:headbang2:
Thanks for your input. I hope the little guy does okay in my tank. I lowered my salinity a bit with a water change, but it is stil 1.008.
Thanks for the compliment on the photos...I like the first one My camera is a kodak easyshare z710. It does a good job, almost too good...look closely at the pics you can see my aquarium needs to be cleaned on the outside...streaky
I'm sorry to say but that puffer will kill another puffer & probably any other fish you have in there, as soon as it gets comfortable. I suggest posting those pics on my forum & getting the proper ID.
Forciing a fish to "tolerate" BW it's whole life isn't a good thing.
Thanks pufferpunk I will post these pics on the pufferforum to see if I can get the ID and I will see if I can get a freshwater tank going if need be (and if it doesn't need one bigger then I can do right now) Otherwise I will see if another lfs will take him.
I was told to have my s.g. at 1.01 for the F8, he seems to be doing well, but I will continue to lower it to see if that is better. Thanks for all your advice
A man called Robert T Ricketts, did a decade-long experiment on F8s & his conclusion was that they lived longest at 1.005. He kept one for over 18 years.
