Will the rusty get more of a blue-purple tint in it when it matures? How long will this take?
Just bought this rusty yesterday at a fish only store. The store came down $3 to 11.99. This fish is between 2-3'' long. The only other store i knew that selled rusty's cheaper was about 30miles from my house. This place kept their tanks real clean thou. I don't have a clue if male or female.

I thought that rusty's had some black verical strips also? I'm i wrong, my LFS is horrible with names. I will be adding a rusty to my lab tank also. Let me know if there temperaments match?

So far shows less agression than any other cichlid in my tank. It defends and scares off some fish in a little area it hides out at, but doesnt chase anybody otherwise.

If a female will my fish get alittle blue/purple tint at all? Will my rusty fish become more attractive than the 3 pics above?

beauty is in the eye of the fish keeper. i think he's a handsome little devil myself.

None of my rusty's have stripes. They seem to get along quite well with my L. caerulus and L. perlmutt, as well as the other cichlids in the tank. The big male will chase anyone who gets too close, but he gives up quick as long as the intruder hightails it outta there.

Sometimes i'll see the slightest banding or stripes on it, then it'll disapear. Must be a mood thing. I bought it from a fish emporium in houston.
Can anybody tell from the picks if it's male or female? It looked the same as others to me at the store. I heard these are very hard to sex with the untrained eye when young. This rusty seems to hide in the fake rock alot. Maybe it's what they do. It's healthy though. It gets around. It'll chase a few fish out away from the rock it hides in and then go hide again.
Hopefully i can find other mbuna africans similar that don't get as large as the average mbuna. Hopefully not too much $.

Rusty is doing great. Can anybody help me with the previous question? Is it a male or female, or is it too young too tell? If female will it get alittle purple tint when it matures? I know what the males will look like. Right now my rust is 2-3'' long. Thanks.
