Same thing as everyone else really - freshwater for a few years........ blabla!

I intened to set up a FOWLR tank. I am only using a 70 lt tank as space is now becoming an issue & i am very aware of having to be very strict with stocking the tank!

I intend to use: about 2" of live sand
live rock
an external eheim 2213 ( spare lieing around so thought id throw it in as back up!)
powerhead for circulation
Standard fluorescent lighting - not intending to have any corals etc
Heater

Questions:

How much live rock do you think i will need?? lfs and people seem to say other things?
Is there a type of lr which works best in a FOWLR system?
What powerhead would people recomend?
CUC?? Yes? No?
What material would be best for the external filter?? I no i dont really need it but even if it helps a little i think it is worth it!

Im sure i will be asking many more questions about stocking shortly!!!!!

Thanks look forward to your replys:feedback:

Welcome Nick. I also a newb but maybe can help. I was told 1-2 pounds LR per gallon of water. Not sure if any one type of LR is better than the other. As far as powerheads go I am using a Aquaclear and have no prob. I was told that for a FOWLR you need 10x the gallon of flow. Inother words if you have a 30gallon tank you need 300gph of flow atleast. Also you wouldn't need external filter if you have enough LR, but could keepit in tank for circulation and to run carbon when needed. Don't take just my word for it as I'm a newb also. However this is what I have heard. Good luck

Thanks.
What is the best way to set up the power head and things in terms of direction? how do you want in circulating?

I think i may put in lr rubble in the filter but prob just use for circulation.
When 1st cycling the tank should i use carbon?? tbh when should i be using carbon??

You should have around 2lbs of LR per gallon. Any LR with a lot of holes, hiding places, coralline, etc. is good LR. When setting up my flow I make sure that there are no dead spots in the tank, and I try to get some of the flow to impact other flow, as to create random water movement. You want good gas exchange. I use an external filter with carbon, but only bc I have soft corals.

not sure if your in america or uk so will put down everything!

Stocking for my tank is: Two Ocellaris Clowns, Two Cleaner Shrimp, One Tailspot Blenny, One Pajama Cardinal, One Pipefish, and One Diamond Watchman Goby. I also have corals, crabs and snails .
