I am setiing up my tank for chiclids after some time off. I want to know if it will be ok to use crushed coral as the substrate as I have learned this keeps the ph good. I have used plain gravel in the past but like the look of crushed coral. Any thoughts here is helpful.

PS-I plan on keeping Malawi chiclids

I have been using CC for some time now, our ph is between 7.6-7.8 {API LTK }, I am using ARAGONITE Sand in the other tank
[45}, ph is closer to 7.8... Cleanings with a gravel vac are easy. IMO.....:)

thanks I have been reading in the forums history and everyone seems confident in using cc in my set up. I will proceed with cc in my malawi set up!

thanks for the help.

Opinions will vary on the use of CC ........:)

Crushed coral is not reccomended for SW tanks, and can, I understand be a disaster in there.

In a FW set-up, for malawis, it is absolutely perfect. I have seen it with sharpish oyster shell type stuff in it; avoid this as Malawis love digging around in the substrate and so you want a very very smooth grain. That aside, it is an ideal substrate for them, no doubt whatsoever.

I have not set up my tank yet I wanted opionions first on what substrate to get. I have had Africans in the past but only uesd regular gravel. I like the look of cc and from the feedback I am getting it sounds like a good fit for malawis. I plan on using a deep blue background and will post pics once set up.

Thanks to all who helped me decide on cc!
