New Sump

I still think you are going to suffer a higher nitrate levels and faster burnout/less effectiveness of your charcoal putting it ahead of the skimmer.

The heater move is good!

I can see your point from a flow perspective. The slower the better around the carbon, but I would be surprised if a protein skimmer is sensitive enough a filter, to filter out the chemical compounds activated carbon targets? I don't feel I want the skimmer as the first item the water hits when it enters the sump. I need some type of barrier, perhaps a fine mesh rather than floss. Nevertheless, thanks for the help.

Thanks - Even a broken clock is right twice a day. :)

Looks good to me rudy.. Also you don't have to run carbon in there 24/7. The only time I personally would do it is if you have corals in close proximety that you suspect are having a chemical war.

Also if you don't want to use floss, you can use a filter sock.. Just keep a couple of them around so you can have one ready for when the other is in the wash.

Hi All - with the spring and summer seasons my project slowed to an almost hault. However, this past week ahs been like Christmas in July. :headbang2: I should be ready to stock by labor day weekend.

I ordered all the final equipment I need (sump pump [blueline 55HD], closed loop pump [sequence dart], oceans motions 4-way and 4 revolutions, skimmer and supreme mag 9) to completely plumb the system and plan to do as much of the work as possible this weekend.

I also need to complete the sump project. But I ahve a question reagrding my sump design. I am looking for clarification on what I have seen people design and refer to as a bubble added to their sump. Other than the obvious, what is the benefit of this addition, where should I position such a structure, and is there really a need given my baffle system?

Thanks a Bunch

P.S. here is a refresher pic of my final sump design for your review and critique

are you putting this in your basement?
If so, run a seperate fuge!
If not, consider splitting your drains and running one into the pre skimmer section, and one directly into the fuge...
also, i have heard you want the outlet side of your skimmer dumping into the section next to it, so it doesnt recirculate...dont know for sure on that one tho..

7 - Thanks for the Reply. Yes the sump is located in the basement below. However, I have a 125 gal all glass tank for the sump and prefer to kep the fuge within this large tank.

I have seen the splitting technique you spoke and it seems pretty easy to do. Perhaps I will try that. Why is it considered so much better than to have all the water simply passing through in one direction?

Can you explain more to me about the skimmer position? Are you saying I should somehow have the skimmer output dumping directly into the next chamber?

Thanks again, Keith

well, im no expert, but maybe someone will elaborate..
if you skim, before the fuge...you may take out some things the plants would like to consume...
and if you fuge before the skimmer, you will remove pods...
so the only way i see to get the best of both worlds, is to split the return, and give both sections water direct from the display...
and yes, i was told by my lfs to have the skimmer output dump directly into the next chamber, so the skimmer isnt wasting time trying to skim water it has already skimmed, while still "dirty" water passes by because the skimmer is busy reskimming
(if that makes sense)
but again...ima noob, and this is just what ive "learned", and is what im basing my sump build off of...
