its not the fact that they are both males... two male oscars would get along fine. its just that male kissing gouramis litterally tourture the loser of the mouth fight. you'd need to get many more to spread aggression

to do a fishy cycle, you need to test your water daily, and do water changes that will keep your ammonia levels, and later your nitrite levels, below .25ppm. if you are showing .5 ppm then a 50% change will work, if they are higher you have to change more water out, and if lower than you can change less. also, i would only add 2-4 fish at a time, wait, add, wait a couple weeks, add 2 more, etc.
Thanks for all the responses. What a great site! I have populated my tank with 8 giant danios and 1 baby pleco. Those Danios are active fish! I have completed a 50% water change as the ammonia was somewhere between .25 and .5. I think I may have been over feeding, there was a lot of crap floating around in there! I'm waiting for things to cycle before I add any more fish. Maybe a couple of Balas?
Nobody mentioned that this tank is way too small for a common pleco. Commons grow to lengths over 2 feet. Your tank is only 1 1/2 feet wide? Will not work. There are several other plecos that will work however.
