i just bought a new tank, 55 gallon with a topfin 60 and an aqua clear 500 and a undergravel filter, i just set it up yesterday. whats the best way to cylce and how long before i can add fish? i also have a 20 gallon that has 2 rd pacus, 3 gouramis. i am transfering the fish to the 55 gallon, but i need to know how long i need to wait, the water in the 55 gallon is already clear, also can you ever have to much filtration?

I guess my last post was off the topic. Sorry. There is a sticky thread in the newbi section about cycling. Maybe that will help. What I'd do is take the filter off the 20g tank and put it on the 55g tank. Then put all the fish in the 55g tank. Then do a fishless cycle on the 20g tank.

You can never have to much filteration.

your telling me that pacus can break through a tanks glass? that seems hard to believe, aslo im cylcing the 55 gallon not the 20 gallon, i already have two filters on the 55 gallon (Aqua clear 500 and topfin 60) all the fish are in the 20 gallon right now and im going tomove them to the 55 but i need to know how long i should wait. i put one of the gourami's and the little red fish in the new 55 gallon (just set it up yesterday) just this morning and theyre doing fine.

Tankbusters are fish that get huge. Pacus may start small but they will get HUGE. They will get too big for a 55. I bought one when i first got my 75 gallon and discovered that they will get to big for this tank.

so what should i do with it once it gets to big to be in my 55 gallon, i wont be able to get another tank, simply no more room. What can i do with them?

I'd take them back to the LFS now while they're still small and save yourself the hassle. I used to work in a LFS when I was a teen and people would come in all the time wanting to trade in these giant fish... Giant plecos, giant kisser gouramis, arrowanas, pirahna, etc... We wouldn't take them. They were too big for our tanks too and no one else wants them when they see how big they can get!

Just my opinion!

:-D

well most people suggest to take it back to the store while its still small because most stores won't take them back when theyre big. But if you really want to keep them you should try to find somebody who will take them when theyre too big. If worst comes to worst they make good food

another thing is the fish store i bought them from doesnt take refunds, its a family owned bussiness. so i cant take them back..
